Are you SAD?

The weather is a common topic that comes up in almost all conversations that we have. It is the one topic that you can relate to with anyone in the world. Most often, talking about weather can be a good icebreaker in starting up a conversation with someone who you have just met.

As the season adjusts from fall to winter, it gets colder and the days become smaller. I have notice a trend among my family and friends to become more fatigue and lethargic during the winter months. I even find myself lacking the energy to go out in the evenings or workout at the gym. These symptoms are not just coincidental, it is called Season Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that people suffer from in the winter months. It is caused by the chemical imbalance in the brain because of the lack of sunlight. There are treatments such as light boxes that some sufferers use.

The reverse is also true if the weather is really hot, as people avoid going outdoors due to the heat. Doing a quick search on the Internet, I found that the best climate in the world is in Faulconbridge, Australia (my sister verified this with her high school Geography teacher), which has the most equitable climate, evenly distributed rainfall and mild temperatures all throughout the year.

I personally don't think I suffer from SAD, but I did feel a little down today after visiting the dentist, who gave me a feminine color toothbrush ... atleast it was a different color than my siblings toothbrush, cause that would just drive me crazy.

I thought I was a little sad when getting no toothbrush from my last dentist appointment, but realized that getting a wrong color toothbrush was worse than getting none ... don't worry, there's always spray paint. Maybe you should deck up your toothbrush with pomp pomp hanging from one end .. just to get your siblings very very jealous. I bet your niece would fight over it from another house too, if she doesn't think you're (or actually me) a little crazy :)

Omar, If we ever end up talking about the weather, I know now your just making conversation with me ... j/k :), but seriouly, I have been involved in even worse conversations than the weather. Has anyone ever get stuck talking to family oversea's. I know when I have to talk to my family from Pakistan, here is the typical convo:

Auntie from Pakistan: P
Ozair: O

P: Betaa, How are you doing ?
O: I'm doing well.
P: How is your brother and sister
O: They are well
P: How is Saqib, Basit, Amer, Noreen, Saima, Zaynub, etc ... doing?
O: They are also well.
P: How is
O: (interrupting) we are all well!!!
P: So when you coming to Pakistan ?
O: Like next month (sarcastically)
P: Ok good. So how is ...
O: (Gives phone to mom)

Colors are gender neutral, and if Allah SWT blesses me with a son one day, he'll be wearing ALL colors :) yes...even Pink.

Saira, atleast you will make it easy to buy clothes for your future son inshallah, hopefully, hot pink will be out of fashion soon.

Oddly enough, I actually found myself more productive in university during the winter term than the summer term. When the weather is nice, the last thing I wanted to do was study.

I don't think there's anything wrong with pink, but I would hesitate to dress a baby boy in pink if only because everyone would assume he was a little girl.
BUT pink dress shirts look really amazing with a suit. What is it with guys anyway? All grays and blacks and dark blues and browns. It's so depressing. Even baby blue is too 'girly' for some guys.

During peak summer time it can reach 122 degrees!; every bit of moisture anywhere evaportes resulting in 100% humidity, so the 'real' heat is higher than whats being measured.

Our version of SAD is the exact opposite. Even with air conditioners running on full blast, its hard to fall asleep, people are more irratable than usual and everything exposed to the SUN melts! For example:

1. My sister left a purple scrunchy in the back seat; it lost all its color and was half white the next day.
2. I left a pair of sandles in the car and pulled them out the next day. They seemed to be fine at first but disintegrated after my first step.
3. Numerous audio cassettes have melted and become a part of the car. They cant be scraped off, they've melted into the cars' plastic.
4. Burns from a boiling steering wheel are common.
5. On really hot days, one can find several cars lined up because of radiators that blew up.
6. Streets are flowing with little streams of water; Air conditioners extract moisture from the air and drip.

About the whole pink baby boy thing; I feel like parents love to try everything with their babies. I have photos of Bhaijan (Omar) in a girls frock at 6 months. I wish I had a baby frock for Ahmed too; I'd love to show it to his wife someday lol. (Yes Rosina, no need to ask, You'll have the image soon enough...)

What Asad forgot to mention is that in the hot Gulf summers, the temperature inside a parked car (i.e. no airconditioner running) gets several degrees higher than the outside temperature.

Here's one I remmeber that's not on Asad's list - when adding water to your radiator tank, you need to open the knob carefully and stand back for a bit while the boiling water inside gushes out.

And I hate those pools of water from you find outside every house and building that use the old window air conditioners. It's disgusting.

Okay back to memo that I'm not even halfway through and that's due tomorrow or I get no credit for the course.

Well, I was going to bring up some cold Canadian winter facts, but after further review, the winter suffering is not comparable at all to the summers in the Middle East. In-fact, this winter has been the warmest I can ever remember. You guys must hate global warming.

LOL ... Asad, that is just plain evil, but I do understand it is necessary for a great joke. I remember when I was a kid, my mom used to dress my brother and me in matching outfits every time we went out. Now, I can understand if we were twins, but we are 4 years apart!!!

Safiyyah, I agree that a little bit of pink when done right can look fine with ties and dress shirts, but if we start seeing guys wearing pink shalwar kameez or thobes, I will blame Saira for this craziness … j/k ;-)

Yes, I suffer from SAD. LOL. My grades this winter were very SAD. But then again, they went up. But they're SAD again. What did the groundhog indicate anyways?
